China Expands Online Accommodation Registration for Foreigners Staying Outside Hotels

The National Immigration Administration confirmed the nationwide expansion of online accommodation registration on September 21, 2026. This allows foreign nationals residing outside hotels to complete the mandatory registration via an official online platform, app, or mini-program. Previously, this process often required an in-person visit to a local public security authority within 24 hours of arrival at the accommodation.

This requirement applies to travellers staying with friends, relatives, in private rentals, or their own properties. Hotels continue to manage registration for their guests, so those staying exclusively in hotels are not personally affected. Failure to register can lead to a warning and a fine of up to 2,000 yuan.
