European Commission Sets Out the Difference Between EES and ETIAS

The European Commission has published guidance distinguishing the Entry/Exit System from ETIAS, two systems frequently confused.

The Entry/Exit System registers non-EU travellers biometrically at the border. ETIAS is a travel authorisation applied for online before departure. They are separate systems introduced on separate timetables.

The Commission has set out the difference explicitly, following persistent confusion about which applies when.

That confusion has a cost: sites have sold ETIAS applications for a system that is not yet live. The Commission's own guidance is the authoritative source.
