Nepal plans digital identity app for foreign visitors

The proposed system would allow foreign visitors to use their digital passport and visa details for identity verification. This includes procedures such as hotel check-ins, domestic flights, currency exchange transactions, and certain security checks. The app would link directly to the Department of Immigration's central database and could also be used for visa extension applications.

Travellers must still present their physical passport when entering or exiting Nepal. Officials submitted the proposal to the Ministry of Home Affairs on 16 September 2026. This initiative forms part of Nepal's wider Foreign Nationals Management Information System (FNMIS), launched in 2026, aimed at improving traveller tracking and assistance during emergencies. Final approval and implementation details are still pending, so travellers should continue carrying their physical passport.
