South Africa Mandates Online Travel Declarations for All Incoming and Outgoing Travellers

South Africa will require all travellers to submit mandatory online declarations starting 1 July 2026.

From 1 July 2026, all individuals entering or leaving South Africa must complete a digital traveller declaration. This new system, called the South African Traveller Management System (SATMS), replaces previous paper customs forms. The mandatory declaration applies to South African citizens, permanent residents, and foreign nationals, excluding air and sea passengers only transiting. Travellers must submit the declaration online via the SARS website, SATMS app, or self-service kiosks within 24 hours of their scheduled departure. Non-compliance may result in travel delays, financial penalties, or goods detention under customs legislation.
