Tanzania Eases Visa Process for Nigerian Travellers, Maintains Referral Requirements
Tanzania removed Nigeria from its referral visa category, streamlining the application process for its citizens.
The Tanzanian Immigration Services Department removed Nigeria from its referral visa category, effective September 25, 2026. This change streamlines the entry process for Nigerian citizens, who can now follow standard visa procedures without requiring prior special clearance. Previously, a special referral approval was mandatory before travel.
From October 1, foreign visitors to Tanzania will also be required to purchase mandatory travel insurance, costing $44 per person. Referral visa requirements remain in effect for travellers from a significant list of countries, including Mali, Niger, Iran, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria, who must apply online and await approval before travelling.
Other nationalities, such as those from the United States, United Kingdom, Russia, and China, already use the standard visa process. Citizens from countries including Kenya, Uganda, and South Africa are permitted visa-free entry into Tanzania.
