Tanzania Publishes Regulations for Mandatory $44 Inbound Travel Insurance

The Insurance (Inbound Travel Insurance) Regulations, 2026, published on 4 September 2026, detail mandatory $44 insurance for foreign nationals entering mainland Tanzania. The policy, valid for up to 92 days and allowing multiple entries, covers emergency medical treatment, evacuation, repatriation, and baggage loss. Visitors may purchase the insurance before travel or upon arrival, but those without it risk denied entry.

Exemptions are granted to residents of East African Community and Southern African Development Community states, but not for other nationalities like US or UK citizens. The state-owned National Insurance Corporation or its registered partners will issue the policies. Authorities have not yet announced the official implementation date for this new entry requirement. Travellers to both mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar might need to purchase two separate $44 policies, as mutual recognition is not confirmed.
