Tanzania to Require Mandatory Travel Insurance for Visitors from October 2026
Tanzania will mandate $44 travel insurance for most foreign visitors entering its mainland from October 1, 2026.
The Ministry of Finance officially confirmed the Inbound Travel Insurance programme will commence on 1 October 2026. This mandatory policy costs $44, covers up to 92 days for multiple entries, and includes emergency medical care, evacuation, repatriation, and baggage loss. It must be purchased from the National Insurance Corporation (NIC) or an approved partner.
Travellers can buy the insurance online through the NIC portal or upon arrival, though advance purchase is recommended. Residents of East African Community (EAC) and Southern African Development Community (SADC) member states are exempt from this requirement. Travellers entering through Zanzibar will obtain coverage from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC) instead. Failure to hold valid insurance may lead to denial of entry.
